SGPA to Percentage

Convert a 10-point SGPA into an approximate percentage. The default formula matches AICTE conventions but you can adjust the constant for your university.

SGPA to Percentage Converter

Convert your SGPA on a 10-point scale into an approximate percentage.

Approximate percentage —

Default formula: Percentage = (SGPA × 10) − 7.5. Many universities use a similar formula but the constant differs. Use the value printed in your university handbook for the most accurate conversion.

What this calculator does

It converts a semester SGPA on the 10-point scale used by most Indian and Pakistani universities into an approximate percentage. Conversion is not a single universal formula — every university council uses a slightly different constant — so the calculator lets you adjust the subtractor to match your institution.

The most common formula

Percentage = (SGPA × 10) − 7.5

This is the formula published by AICTE and a number of large university councils. With an SGPA of 8.20 it gives (8.20 × 10) − 7.5 = 82 − 7.5 = 74.5%. The subtraction of 7.5 reflects the fact that the 10-point scale's grade bands don't line up perfectly with percentages — a 10.0 SGPA represents a band of percentages, not exactly 100%.

Other formulas you might encounter

  • Percentage = SGPA × 9.5. Used by CBSE in India for board exam reporting and by some affiliated universities. With an SGPA of 8.20 this gives 77.9%.
  • Percentage = SGPA × 10. A simple linear conversion used by a handful of universities. Easy to remember; less accurate at the extremes.
  • University-specific tables. Some institutions publish lookup tables — for example, an SGPA between 7.0 and 7.5 maps to a defined percentage band. If your university provides one, use that instead.

The calculator above defaults to the AICTE-style subtractive formula because it produces the most realistic-looking percentages in the upper SGPA range. Set the subtractor to 0 if you want the simple ×10 conversion, or use 7.5 (default), 10, or your institution's published constant otherwise.

Why universities don't use a single formula

The 10-point grade-point scale and percentage grading carry slightly different information. A grade point typically represents a band — for example, 9.0 might cover percentages from 86 to 90 — so converting a single SGPA back to a single percentage means choosing where in the band to land. Different councils made that choice differently, which is how we ended up with several "official" formulas.

When to use this conversion

The most common reason students convert SGPA to percentage is for forms that demand it — government job applications, scholarship portals, and visa documents are typical examples. The conversion is also useful when comparing your performance to a percentage-based programme or to historical data from before your university switched to GPA reporting.

When NOT to use this conversion

  • Official transcripts. Your transcript reports SGPA and CGPA directly; don't substitute a calculated percentage on official documents.
  • Foreign university applications. Most international universities prefer to see your raw SGPA/CGPA and your university's official grading scale. They'll do their own conversion using credential-evaluation services.
  • Comparisons across universities. An 8.0 SGPA at one university doesn't necessarily mean the same percentage as an 8.0 at another. Use the conversion formula published by each institution.

A worked example

Suppose your sixth-semester SGPA is 7.65 and your university uses the standard subtractive formula. Percentage = (7.65 × 10) − 7.5 = 76.5 − 7.5 = 69%. On the simpler ×9.5 formula it would be 72.68%, and on the linear ×10 formula it would be 76.5%. Three different answers, all defensible — which is exactly why the constant should match your institution's published method.

Combining with CGPA

If your goal is to convert your overall CGPA (not just one semester's SGPA) to a percentage, use the same formula with your CGPA value. Or run each semester's SGPA through the conversion individually and average — though the result will be almost identical for the standard formulas because they're linear.

What a typical percentage range looks like

Using the (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 formula, here's what common SGPA values translate to:

SGPAApprox. PercentageBand
9.587.5%Outstanding
9.082.5%Excellent
8.072.5%Very Good
7.062.5%Good
6.052.5%Average
5.042.5%Pass

Use the calculator above with your own subtractor to get an exact match for your university.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula should I use to convert SGPA to percentage?

Use the formula published by your university. The most common is Percentage = (SGPA × 10) − 7.5, but some institutions use Percentage = SGPA × 9.5 or a lookup table. Check your handbook before submitting official documents.

Is the conversion exact?

No conversion is exact. Grade points represent bands of percentages, so any single-value conversion is approximate. Two students with the same SGPA can have slightly different actual percentages.

Can I use this formula for CGPA too?

Yes — the same formula applies. Substitute your CGPA for SGPA in the equation. Many universities even apply the same conversion factor to both.

My university uses a percentage-only system. Why would I need this?

You probably don't. This tool is for students whose university reports SGPA/CGPA but who need to submit a percentage for an application form.

Will foreign universities accept my converted percentage?

Usually no — they prefer your original SGPA along with your university's grading scale. Credential-evaluation agencies like WES, ECE, or IQAS will compute their own equivalent.
